You might try the AISC website and specifically AISC Design Guides 4, 16, and 21.  Then go to the Steel Tips website and look for their publications on Gusset Plates, Reduced Beam Section Connections, and SCBF.

As far as steel member splice details go a lot depends on the nature and purpose of the member.  If it is a significant weak link in a seismic resisting system then there may be specific code requirements for capacity or omega increase load design.  If there is a possibility that the loads will be increased at a latter date on the structure (happens all the time in industrial work) then you may again want to design for the member capacity.  If the member is very unlikely to ever see an increase loading and is not a significant weak link in an overall system then you are certainly allowed to design the member for the actual loads.

Steel connection design

Dear List,

Please advise me with a good reference material discussing steel connection design or related to steel connection design(i.e. code, books, pdf, sites or lectures).

Furthermore, on splice connection design, what do thing is the best design approach(force based design method or member capacity based design method). Using member capacity design, it may require huge number of bolts and a thicker plates especially if the member that is spliced is a huge size wide flange member. Please advise which is the correct approach.
