Very sad.

I'm reading at the moment an excellent book - "Fearful Symmetry" by Brian Lee Crowley - on the decline and (hopefully) future rise of Canadian conditions, largely caused by very poor political management over the last 50 years of the Quebec separation problem and the baby boom, both of which he says are coming to a close.
He defines politics as the art of taking as much as possible (taxes) from the masses without provoking a revolt, and redistributing this wealth to friends and those who make the most noise.
It's a very serious and eye-opening book.  Every night when I finish reading a few pages, I thump the pillow and curse myself for not having realised what was going on all these years.
I will keep my promise to myself to move out at the end of 2011.  But where to?  All economies are controlled by politicians who follow this same creed.  Some countries more than others.
I guess the only solution is to be a friend or make a lot of noise.  But engineers don't do that sort of thing.  We are so happy to be allowed to calculate and design and create that we don't see what is going on in the real world.

Oh well, I'm off to watch a movie for a bit of escapism before retiring to thump the pillow.
