I'm not familiar with the DOE standard; but a practical solution may be bar style floor grating.  It's readily available and relatively inexpensive.

Subject: DOE-STD-1020 - Outdoor HVAC Equipment

Need to provide wind-borne debris protection for existing outdoor HVAC equipment.  Protection is to be in accordance with DOE-STD-1020 which is pretty stringent:   15 pound 2x4 at 50 mph.

I've seen a test report for 3/4" 9 gauge expanded metal for ASTM E1966 - 9 pound 2x4 at 34 mph.   But that testing obviously falls short of the DOE-STD-120.

Has anyone worked on a project that required the DOE-STD-1020 (or similar) compliance?  If so, how was the HVAC equipment protected?
