Re: Wind speeds in California

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
 Thanks to everyone who replied.
The Canadian codes all give climatic data for towns and cities, which include wind pressures for 1/10 year winds and 1/50 year winds, the latter for design, and the 1/10 for deflection. I used the AASHTO Specification for Design of Light Standards, Luminaires and Signs as I thought that would be conservative. My customer has the job, but he is now dealing with local contractors who will bid based on my prelim design. I gather they will then get a local engineer to do a final design and prepare final drawings.

Gary,

Keep in mind that the wind speed is HIGHLY linked to the wind design methodology. This is heavily reinforced by the link that Chic provided...it effectively provides three different "code" wind speeds. It provides wind speeds for ASCE 7-10, for ASCE 7-05, and for ASCE 7-93 since that is when there were "shifts" in the wind design methodology in the US codes.

It has been a while since I looked at Canadian codes and even then I did not look too much as wind loads...mainly snow (and rain) loads. So, I don't know how well the Canadian code "jives" with how US code methodology.

Having said that, you are potentially going to get close enough for preliminary design for costing purposes as I cannot imagine that the Canadian and US methodology is wildly different.

Scott

I have an international customer for whom I design road side sound
barriers. He has asked me for a preliminary design for costing purposes.
Can anybody tell me what you would use for the design wind speed in
California for these sound barriers.
