Palmer,

A whaler is a horizontal beam member that goes in front of vertical soldier
piles in an excavation to distribute the lateral thrust of the soil from the
soldier piles to tie-back anchors or kickers.

OK, In an earlier post, reference was made to a "waler", after a cursor
search I am unable to find out exactly what this is.  Please give me a lead
to the engineering definition of a waler.
