Re: Balcony Post base dessign

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
I just completed a 2 story motel, 42" high guard rails with HSS 2"x2" posts. Because you get drunken yahoos somtimes pushing or kicking the guard rails, I always use 3/8 plate. PL 1/4" will distort. Yahoos, no offence intended.

Dilip,

Not sure where you are located, but the rail height in Ca. is 42" by code, in any case, if I use your numbers I come up with 2.6k of tension on your bolts ( 200#x36"/ 2.75"), moment in the base plate would then be 2.6k x 0.75", and if you use 50ksi plate, (allowable Fb = 0.75x50) I come up with a 1/4" plate

I have HSS2x2x1/8" balcony post, 3 feet high. Base plate size is 5"x5".
Typical calcs would result in 5/8" base plate thickness based on 0.2k
lateral load, 0.6kf moment. It seems excessive for a balcony post ?
Your thoughts on design ideas of plate ?
Thanks.
