RE: Special Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls

Called CMACN.

No more 1.5!

This might help for those working with masonry and getting adjusted to the
new building codes:

I would like to confirm that there is no longer a 1.5 factor for the design
of Masonry Shear Walls in high seismic regions.

This provision was last seen (by my eyes anyway) in 2006 IBC / 2007 CBC in
section 2106.5.1.

First of all, we have to use Special Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls.

Going from the 2008 TMS 402 to the 2011 TMS 402, the shear equation for
masonry shear walls has cut the allowable in half (worse than removing the

1.5 factor!). See equation 2-28 in 2008, added equation 2-29 for Special
Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls.

Am I missing something, like the 1.5 factor?

Thank you,
