For me, flipping back and forth between mm and m and km is hella easier than 
 jiggering Feet-Inches vs. Inches vs. Miles, etc.

Gotta disagree with you there!

As long as we can agree that "er" is superior to "re." :-)

What is hard about metric is keeping track of all those long numbers where 
your unit of measurement is based on millimetres and then metres for other 
items.
