Re: Berkeley Balcony Collapse

The City has released its report & recommendations.
http://www.berkeleyside.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Staff-Recommendation.pdf
The "investigation" concluded that this deck & the one below had a lot of rot. (Big Surprise.) They did not investigate the source of the water leak(s). The City does not seem to understand that omitting the waterproofing from any kind of inspection protocol is the primary flaw in the construction process. They recommended ventilation (OK), decay resistant construction materials(GOOD), inspections at 6 months & 5 years((TOO SOON & TOO LATE). Because of their almost complete lack of experience with the water leaks that result from poor construction practice, the City's recommendations have failed to address the real problem. There must be periodic inspections during construction by qualified persons to insure that the buildings' waterproofing is adequate. To continue to build leaky buildings and then make repairs, is ridiculous.
